I read this immediately after seeing the warm artwork by Suzanne F. Parrott. After my first reading I decided to forward my copy to my daughter Elizabeth in Boston who has a spiritual/familial attachment to Honey Bees and a very open mind to advancing young women in traditional male professions. Then I bought 5 more copies with the intent to have grade school level teachers read the book in class and ask for brief written reactions. I hope they will then share with the author Jeff Cates.
I have 5 of Mr. Cates books. He’s a spectacular sci-fi writer and commands attention in mysterious ways. In this case, I love the warmth, determination and sense of victory overcoming societal prejudice and physical limitations perceived of females in a way that may encourage young women and calm down some prejudiced attitudes of male dominance in some areas of our society. This isn’t a book about lowering any entrance level standards, but raising the bar above our self imposed limitations for both male and female norms.
